Sparking Curiosity with LPC's Little Hawks
Of all the moments since I started Galactic Getaway, one of the most special happened right on my own campus. On May 19, a group of young kids from Las Positas College's Little Hawks Child Development Center & Lab School came to storytime at the LPC Library, where our rocket exhibit was on display.
Storytime Under the Rockets
I sat in front of the display case, with Starship, SLS, Falcon Heavy, and the rest of our 1:144 scale models lined up behind me, while the kids gathered on a colorful mat right in front. We read Mae Among the Stars, the story of Mae Jemison, who grew up dreaming about space and became the first Black woman to travel there.
Raw Curiosity
Kids this age don't hold back. Hands shot up before I could even turn the page. Every question was honest and unfiltered, the kind of curiosity that isn't worried about getting the answer wrong.
My goal wasn't to teach them every fact about rockets. It was to spark that first "whoa" moment, the one where a rocket stops being a picture in a book and becomes something real they want to know more about.
Why This One Meant So Much
I started Galactic Getaway because a sonic boom at Starbase lit a spark in me. Seeing that same spark in kids who are just starting their learning journey reminded me exactly why these rockets belong in libraries.
Thank you to the LPC Library and the Little Hawks teachers for bringing such an amazing group of young explorers.
Every big dream starts small. Sometimes it starts on a reading mat, with one little hand in the air.
